I Need You Say No  -  Post 3

ENTER ZOE-BETH

Zoe-Beth is to be the new singer for my Unit 8 "I Need You Say No" submission. What have we established? We are to re write a few of the lyrics and change some of the vocal melody. This isn't because the old ones were bad, but because she is a different kind of singer and her style didn't suit the original content.

At the time of writing this, I have 10 days until the deadline... so a production plan is in order. We will create the new vocal line out of take tracks. Looping each section 4-5 times to leave me with enough content to patch together a solid take. We decided on this as she only had a few days to learn the track and she didn't feel she could give a consistent performance. I'm acting as an enabler for her performance... and we both feel this recording technique will give me the best possible content to work with.

The recording was extremely quick and efficient. While I set up the VO booth and line checked, she warmed up her vocals in Live room D. I set her up with a Neumann U87, a stereo headphone backing track, a music stand and a drinks table. We set the input gain on the console, and balanced her fold back. As most singers do; she wanted a reverb in the cans. I sent her an effects return from the MX200 outboard unit and balanced that (100% wet) reverb, backing track, and vocal return to her needs.

Like we planed; the vocals were compiled in take banks, section by section. Once finished we had maybe 11 takes of each section down and 3 takes of the entire vocal line in one go. More than enough to work with.
